Explore multiple ways of creating music, from melody and lyrics to full productions in a DAW.

Learn how ideas develop naturally, how songs are structured, and how production supports creative expression, all within a flexible, student-focused learning environment.

Composition & Production

  • In this pathway, learners explore how music is created, from the very first idea through to a finished track. Rather than following a single rigid formula, lessons are built around multiple creative entry points, allowing ideas to develop naturally in ways that feel intuitive to each student.

  • Songwriting, arrangement, and production are treated as connected skills, helping learners understand how melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, and sound design influence one another. This integrated approach makes learning more practical, creative, and relevant to real-world music-making.

  • While there is a clear structure behind the lessons, sessions remain flexible and artist-led. Content adapts to each learner’s goals, experience level, and creative interests. This flexibility is discussed during the free induction session, ensuring lessons feel supportive rather than prescriptive.

What's covered in the classes

Students learn through a method-based approach, in which ideas can emerge in various ways yet still yield strong musical outcomes. This helps creativity feel accessible rather than intimidating.

Creative starting points may include:

  • Writing chord progressions on piano or guitar

  • Developing melodies or hooks from vocal ideas

  • Writing lyrics and rhythmic phrasing

  • Capturing ideas on a phone or recorder and developing them further

  • Starting directly in Logic Pro with instruments or vocals

As ideas develop, lessons focus on:

  • Song structure and arrangement

  • Translating musical ideas into recorded form

  • Understanding how production supports songwriting

  • Building confidence using Logic Pro

  • Editing and refining ideas without overcomplicating the process

Rather than separating theory, songwriting, and production, these elements are taught together, so everything makes musical sense in context.

Requirements

To get the most out of the Composition & Production pathway, students are expected to have a basic understanding of music theory and some familiarity with a musical instrument, such as a piano or a guitar.

This may include:

  • Understanding basic rhythm and timing

  • Awareness of notes, scales, or chords

  • The ability to explore musical ideas on an instrument

If this foundation is not yet in place, introductory music theory sessions or instrument-focused lessons may be recommended before moving fully into composition work. These foundations help ensure that songwriting, arrangement, and production concepts feel enjoyable rather than overwhelming.

Where appropriate, this preparation can be:

  • Integrated into early lessons

  • Or explored through the Music Theory or Instrument Pathways available on the website

All of this is discussed during the free induction session, where a clear and supportive learning route is agreed.

Flexibility & Personalisation

Lessons are designed to meet students where they are.
Some sessions may focus more on songwriting, others on arrangement or production,  depending on the student’s goals and creative flow.

This flexible structure allows:

  • Beginners to build confidence step by step

  • Intermediate students to refine ideas and techniques

  • Advanced students to develop a personal creative workflow

All lesson pathways are discussed during the free induction session, where goals, interests, and experience levels are explored.
